B.C. Greens call for Employer Health Tax reform

For immediate release

January 25, 2023

VICTORIA, B.C. – Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley, is calling on the BC NDP to increase the exemption threshold for small businesses paying the Employer Health Tax (EHT) to $1.5 million.

“Small businesses continue to suffer the economic consequences of a pandemic, rising inflation, and labour shortages. It is time for this government to support BC’s local economies.”

“Small businesses are facing impossible odds against rising costs, including an increase to the federal Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) rates for 2023. Raising the EHT exemption to $1.5 million would allow small businesses to save thousands of dollars a year in a time where every penny counts.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and sit at the center of our communities. Government should help create the conditions for them to succeed.”
