VICTORIA, B.C. – The B.C. Green Caucus responded today to the 2024 Speech from the Throne.

“Once again from the BC NDP, we see a lack of strategy, a lack of action, a lack of accountability for their spending – there’s nothing tying all of this together,” said Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Green Party and MLA for Cowichan Valley. “The Throne Speech paints a picture that doesn’t match up with the real problems British Columbians are experiencing. Healthcare remains inaccessible for too many, schools are overcrowded and lack resources, homes are too costly, and the gap between the rich and the poor keeps getting wider.”

“The moment they needed to connect with people, they demonstrated just how out of touch they are,” said Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands. “While I was encouraged to hear a reaffirming commitment to reconciliation and UNDRIP at a time when it has been shaken, it was disappointing to not see the lived realities British Columbians acknowledged, especially people with disabilities, people supporting families, young people and our precarious elders.”

“Since 2020, the BC NDP has told a story of progress, but it’s one that fails to reflect the lived experiences of people in this province,” continued Furstenau. “For us to achieve this progress as a province, we have to start by acknowledging where we are really at – inequality is widening and deepening, services are lacking and the uncertainty that climate change brings is making it hard for us to imagine the future we want for our children.

“British Columbians deserve more than a fragmented approach with old promises that fail to offer a clear picture of where our province is going. The B.C. Green Caucus will continue to advocate for genuine solutions that address inequality, climate change, and the lack of access to basic services.”
