BC Green MLA Rob Botterell reacts to Goldstream highway expansion decision

February 5, 2026

VICTORIA, B.C. – Rob Botterell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, issued the following statement in response to the Province’s decision to halt the Goldstream widening project:

“This is a major win for everyone who spoke up and pushed back against the government’s Goldstream highway proposal. I especially want to acknowledge the relentless efforts of W̱SÁNEĆ Elder ZȺWIZUT Carl Olsen.”

“Goldstream is a vital area for salmon habitat and protection. First Nations rely on the Goldstream river for food and harvesting; and not only that, each year, locals and visitors gather here to witness the salmon run. The government’s proposal would have put that ecosystem at risk without making any meaningful road safety improvements.”

“The Province’s commitment to conduct further environmental assessment and take additional steps to respect the interests of First Nations is a significant step—and a clear sign that the project is unlikely to proceed as planned.”
