VICTORIA, B.C. – Statement from Jeremy Valeriote, BC Green MLA for West-Vancouver-Sea to Sky, on the Major Projects Announcement by Prime Minister Mark Carney:
“We’re encouraged to see that Prime Minister Mark Carney recognizes British Columbia’s potential for investment—particularly in electrification using clean energy. However, that investment must be directed where it truly counts: into our communities, renewable energy, and the sustainable renewal of our forestry sector—not toward multinational corporations and dying fossil fuel industries.”
“The major projects highlighted by the Prime Minister today raise serious questions: Ksi Lisims LNG does not represent the interests of British Columbians, and the Prime Minister’s message that fossil fuel projects, such as Ksi Lisims, are low carbon and aid the energy transition is flat-out greenwashing. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s announcement to invest in the North Coast Transmission Line is fraught with uncertainty on how the clean electricity it delivers will be used.”
“Ksi Lisims LNG is a foreign-owned, foreign-built fossil fuel project that will enrich U.S. billionaires while leaving British Columbians to bear the environmental and economic costs. We know Ksi Lisims LNG faces strong opposition from many First Nations and local communities, and we are concerned what fast-tracking and federal investment means for these communities.”
“Prime Minister Carney’s government, like Premier Eby’s, is allowing climate solutions to take a backseat to resource development and fast-tracking.”
“It’s the government’s job to keep people and the environment safe—that’s why there are guardrails. We need assurances from our provincial and federal governments that they won’t shortcut environmental regulations and allow companies to leave behind damaging and expensive liabilities that British Columbians ultimately clean up and pay for.”
“This desperate search for short-term revenue is the direct result of years of failure to invest in the clean economy of the future. BC—and Canada—are being dragged backward by the interests of powerful corporations. The fact is, LNG is a dying industry. The evidence is clear. Continuing to double down on fossil fuels is both economically reckless and environmentally indefensible.”
“While the partial Indigenous ownership of the North Coast Transmission Line outlined in Bill 31 is commendable, we are still working through whether other aspects of this bill are supportable, particularly with the consolidation of power in Cabinet around rate-setting and an electricity allocation framework. As it stands, the North Coast Transmission Line serves LNG and mining projects more than British Columbians. With the federal government’s investment in the North Coast Transmission Line, the BC Greens are concerned that the Prime Minister is attempting to influence legislation currently before the House, namely Bill 31.”
“The BC Greens are deeply concerned with the federal and provincial governments’ main focus: pursuing economic development at the expense of long-term sustainability, science, and community well-being. The fact that the federal government is also entertaining a bitumen pipeline to our North Coast is an absurd and regressive idea rooted in a long and troubled history.”
