Province and Federal Government Side with Corporate Spin in LNG Canada Phase 2 Push

VICTORIA, B.C. – The BC Greens have released the following statement regarding the announcement by the federal and provincial government’s announcement on a potential 2026 final investment decision for LNG Canada Phase 2:

“Today, Premier David Eby and Adrian Dix, the Minister of Climate Solutions—alongside federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson—stood by while the CEO of LNG Canada downplayed the health impacts of LNG flaring, admitted the project has been a learning experience because of excess flaring, pushed for even more corporate subsidies for multinational oil and gas giants, and continued to market LNG Canada as clean,” said BC Green Party leader Emily Lowan.

“British Columbians deserve better than corporate spin from a fossil fuel corporation and the government bankrolling it. This government’s continued fixation on LNG expansion is deeply troubling, misguided, and disconnected from what’s best for British Columbia’s future and the current realities of global energy markets.”

Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky added that, “Before British Columbians are asked to accept more pollution, more public risk, and more corporate subsidies, this government owes people honest answers about the true environmental, economic, and health impacts of LNG expansion,”

The BC Greens’ concerns are amplified by LNG Canada President and CEO Chris Cooper’s admission that it is “a very, very tough world to make LNG competitive.” If the economics are this shaky, British Columbians should be asking why taxpayers are being asked to shoulder even more risk, especially when this project stands to mostly benefit multinational companies like Shell and Petronas, for example.

“The risks of this project and its expansion far outweigh the benefits to British Columbians— fiscally, environmentally, and from a public health perspective. LNG Canada is flaring an average of 40 times more gas than its permits allow. The health effects have never been comprehensively studied and more than 50 organizations are urging Ottawa and B.C. for immediate action to address the health and climate risks. Councils in Terrace, Squamish, Dawson Creek, and Hazelton have all called for proper health assessments related to LNG development and flaring. Still, our governments downplay those concerns,” added Valeriote.

“When asked about those concerns today, the CEO of LNG Canada pointed to the company’s own third-party reviews posted online as reassurance. It’s quite simple: British Columbians should not be taking health advice from the CEO of an LNG company and Canada’s political leaders should not be kissing the ring of a fossil fuel salesman.”
