VICTORIA, B.C. Today, BC’s Auditor General released a report on the Province’s implementation of Harm Reduction Services. The BC Green Caucus has issued the following statement:

“Critics of BC’s current drug policy shouldn’t blame prescribed safer supply and harm reduction programs. It’s clear from the Auditor General’s report that the BC NDP government has not effectively implemented those programs,” said Sonia Furstenau, BC Green Party leader and MLA for the Cowichan Valley.

“The health and safety failures facing British Columbians lie squarely at the feet of this government, not prescribed safer supply.”

The Auditor General’s report includes recommendations to increase transparency, properly consult with those affected by the drug toxicity crisis, and communicate more effectively both internally and with the public. These are important and urgent steps that this government needs to take.

“The politicization of this issue is irresponsible, and only increases harm for people who use drugs and their loved ones,” added Furstenau. “Instead of spreading fear, we should be listening to those with lived and living experience with drug use, and supporting the dedicated frontline workers across BC who are working tirelessly to save lives.”

The provincial government was found wanting last year, when the courts imposed an injunction on Bill 34 due to a lack of critical services. The BC Greens identified those glaring deficiencies at the time, and today’s report is further evidence of the work the BC NDP still need to do.

“Budget 2024 had no new investments in solving this public health crisis. Now is not the time to shrink services. People need affordable housing, reliable healthcare, regulated treatment and more harm-reduction services to mitigate public harm and to reduce public consumption of controlled substances.”
