VICTORIA, B.C. – In response to the dam near the Coastal GasLink Ltd. (CGL) worksite bursting over the weekend and dumping sediment into salmon and steelhead habitat Sonia Furstenau, Leader of the B.C. Greens and MLA for Cowichan Valley has issued the following statement:

“I echo the calls of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs. It is time for the government to issue a stop-work order. This company has repeatedly failed to meet the requirements of its permits, which has caused damage to the river, wetlands, and salmon habitat.

“This latest disaster comes days after Coastal GasLink was issued their third fine for failing to comply with environmental requirements and within weeks of their company being caught failing to install erosion and sediment control in this location.

“This government needs to send a clear message. Industry cannot continue to flout our laws and regulations and be allowed to operate.

“Premier Eby has the opportunity to show he won’t be beholden to the interests of a multibillion-dollar corporation and instead will prioritize the well-being of British Columbians and the environment. He needs to issue a stop work order now.”
