VICTORIA, B.C. – Shortly after 3 p.m. today, the 2024 BC Green Caucus will be officially sworn in as members of the 43rd Parliament. The two newest Green MLAs will take the oath of allegiance in front of friends, family, staff and constituents at the Legislative Assembly, and will then be allowed to sit, vote and execute the work of Members of the Legislative Assembly.
“I’m humbled and energized to serve the constituents of Saanich North and the Islands as MLA. There’s so much I want to contribute to this province, and I’m thrilled that today’s ceremony allows us to actually get going,” said Rob Botterell, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands.
“It’s incredibly moving to spend this day with some of the many people who helped get me elected as MLA. No politician gets to the legislature alone, and I commit to continuing my work as MLA in that same spirit of collaboration,” said Jeremy Valeriote, MLA for West Vancouver-Sea to Sky.
Today’s oath ceremony begins when the Clerk invites the BC Green Caucus Members into the Chamber. The Clerk will make welcoming remarks, followed by Joyce Williams, Squamish Valley Councillor for Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw, Squamish Nation. The Clerk will then ask both Rob Botterell and Jeremy Valeriote to come forward to take their Oath, sign the oath and the Parliamentary Roll. Members of the Legislative Assembly cannot vote or sit until they have taken an oath of allegiance to His Majesty King Charles.
In addition to distinguished guest Joyce Williams from Squamish Nation, the BC Green Caucus are honoured to host Mayor of Squamish Armand Hurford, Mayor of Whistler Jack Crompton and BC Greens Leader Sonia Furstenau for today’s ceremony.
