VICTORIA, B.C. – In response to the appointment of Grace Lore as the new Minister for the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), Adam Olsen, MLA for Saanich North and the Islands, has issued the following statement:
“After repeatedly calling for a leadership overhaul in the ministry, we are glad to see the Premier finally take action. The ministry’s chronic accountability issues have long failed children and families.
“MCFD needs to be fundamentally transformed and rebuilt from the ground up. This change in leadership is the first step to reform. We congratulate Minister Lore on her new position, and hope that she will be empowered to do the necessary work of shaping a child welfare system that British Columbians can trust.
“Time and time again, we’ve heard heartbreaking stories from families, advocates, the Representative of Children and Youth, and the Ombudsperson – describing MCFD failing its obligations to children and families. Basic social work procedures not being followed, youth unable to access mental health care, children dying or disappearing while in care – these should not be characteristics of a child welfare system.
“We expect to see substantial improvements in leadership and accountability in MCFD immediately. With an election approaching, it’s essential that Minister Lore and senior staff also put a plan in place for the next government to continue this crucial work. Our advocacy continues for:
- Mandatory BC College of Social Workers registration for MCFD social workers.
- Enhanced family support, including coaching, counselling, respite care, financial aid, and better access to community services.
- Increased oversight of MCFD staff, group homes, and senior staff accountability.
“British Columbians will be watching Minister Lore. We remain hopeful yet cautious, ready to support meaningful change while holding the ministry to the highest standards of accountability and effectiveness.”
